Kuflon Basics - Discover Peace Re - Discover Nature

Kuflon, the best place to stay while in Uttarkashi offers a variety of activities for you and your family. A totally eco-friendly get away, from observing the camp's waste management system to having an idle chat with a villager, the visitor experiences a world that is untouched, serene, almost timeless.

Start the day with yoga, imbibe the energy, the natural vibe, the call of the Barbet or the cry of the Hill Pheasant being the only distraction. Spend the morning following the winding water channel that makes its way through a silent forest to an even more silent, and magnificent, waterpool. For those blessed with a patient disposition, fly-fishing presents a great opportunity to test their skills. The local stream, the Assi Ganga, abounds in Brown trout. Gentle rolling hills provide the perfect setting for the lazy walker as well as the eager jogger. The surrounding hills challenge the relaxed hiker as well as the more adventurous rock climber.

Of course, one is always welcome to do nothing at all: take a stroll around our vegetable farm, recuperate around the evening bonfire; gaze at the night sky like the first Greek philosophers did; lie down with a beer on a weather-beaten rock and catch a shooting star in your palm.

For those looking for a more structured day, the following planned activities are offered, expert guides ensure a complete and intimate rendezvous with nature.

Village Visit (2N 3D): Walk through the un-explored settings, ask, be curious, observe. It’s the part of Uttarakhand left behind. Seku village (5500 ft / 1700 mts), 2 hrs walk from Kuflon, an alternate trek route to Dodital, it is one of the very few villages in the region to have been least affected by the regular influx of outsiders. Mainly an agro-dependent economy, it has started moving towards seemingly greener pastures. Nonetheless the settings of the village offer a mix of the past and the encroaching modern influence. Siladooni Overnight Camping 2100 mts (3N 4D): Siladooni bugyal is used mainly as pastoral grounds by the local villagers. Although located in the same valley as the renowned Dodital trek, it never made it to any tourist trekking itinerary, because till now, it hasn’t been explored.

The campsite is surrounded by thick forest and is home to barbets, thrushes, woodpeckers and other myriad Himalayan bird species. The water holes made by the villagers for their cattle are favorites with the wild animals and chance to catch them unaware is high for the early risers.

Siladooni is a year round option, best for souls who are ready to sweat it out in the mountains and at the same time want to utilize the time in hand to observe the beginning of the greater Himalayan ranges.

Releasing brown trout
Fly-fishing for brown trout in assi ganga
Hooked and releasing the brown trout

Brown Trout and Fishing for it: Get introduced to the alluring Brown trout that was brought here by the 'Gora Sahib' in 1869. A sport they fancied so much that they introduced them where ever they went. A two minute walk to the ‘Assi Ganga’, which has its origin in the famous Dodital lake, the river is good for Brown trout, in addition to various local species of fish.

Note: Angling is subject to permission available from the forest department on advance notice. The permit issued to us, strictly underlines the catch and release policy. Any fish caught, irrespective of the size and technique, is released by us. Fishing with barbless hooks to avoid tissue damage is recommended.

Cost for angling: Rs 350 per trip per person + Rs 100 angling permit per rod per day. Gillie (helper) & Fishing tackle(Calcutta made 2 piece bamboo rods, single action reels, limited hooks - no flies) provided. It is recommended if one has their own rod and tackle.

A typical fishing trip: (maximum 4 anglers) A normal fishing beat varies from 2 to 3 hrs. depending on one’s patience and energy. There is a lot of walking (2-4 kms), as one has to keep exploring along the mountain stream, and the terrain is mostly over boulders, along small water puddles and sometimes even waist deep water for the more enthusiastic. In which case it’s a good idea to have footwear with good traction. For bait we normally use worms or balls of flour. The accompanying gillie arranges for the fresh bait. Carry a packed meal or hike back to camp for lunch. For the first timers it may seem very exhausting, especially, if they don’t' catch anything, also, continuous walking up and down stream is physically demanding.

The angling cost can be added to our regular packages or your stay at Kuflon.

Season - Angling is temporarily restricted in trout waters from 1st January to 28th February each year to facilitate the fishes to spawn and propagate.
